What photography software can I use to turn a photo black & white but have the ability to select/paint color?

I'm currently using software that allows me to turn a photo black and white and add color/leave color on certain items BUT it only allows a circle shape and I can enlarge or reduce, again it's the shape of a circle. So if I had a flower pic that I turned black and white and wanted to leave the flower in color that area would just be a big circle. I'm looking for a tool/app that will allow me to select or draw the color back in/leave the color in just the flower. Hope this makes sense! Thanks! What photography software can I use to turn a photo black %26amp; white but have the ability to select/paint color?
The program I use, which is free, is GIMP.

You can download it here: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

To keep a selective area in colour, first of all paste your image into GIMP. Then make a duplicate layer. Turn the UPPER layer black and white, there are a range of ways to do this, the one I use is 'desaturate' until the 'colour' menu. Then using either the freehand selection tool or the colour selection tool, select the area ON THE BLACK AND WHITE IMAGE which you want in colour. Perhaps feather a little, delete, and there you are, I think that this is the effect you're looking for.

Hope this helps!

Many programs provide the ability through layers, masks and transparency. You would outline the area and cut it out then the bottom layer shows through in colour etc.
Photoshop, Corel Paint Pro (i think does this as well), and a plethora of the Adobe programs do this as well.
Try Picasa from Google. It's excellent, and free.
Photofiltre is a very good program, I have had it downloaded for a long time now and would recommend it to friends, its a free download, and its on your computer until you un install it basically, its not a free trial, its the full program.

There is also a free download!
